Another article on the iPhone as credit card reader

by SteveBayle on January 2, 2010

This trend towards add on gizmos to turn iPhones into credit card readers is all well and good, but it doesn’t scale for consumers and shop keepers already have credit card readers. I don’t care if they give these things away for free I can’t see consumer adopting them en masse. Check out the history of PC dongles – its a losing strategy. However, perhaps other retailers will emulate Apple’s retail staff that roams the store with iPod credit card readers saving you the time waiting in line to pay for your purchase.

Hopefully this is a (short) bridge to the future where we use our own smartphones to buy without needing a credit card, using near field communications or some other already proven tech.

But you can get a good overview of the current or more accurately, coming state of the art on Mashable.
