Wayne Gretsky’s secret to becoming the world’s greatest hockey player

by SteveBayle on December 22, 2009

Wayne Gretsky holds just about every meaningful record in the world of professional hockey. Yet at barely 6′ tall and 170 pounds he hardly looked like one of the world’s best athletes.

This prompted a reporter to ask him, “Wayne, what is the secret to your hockey success?”
His answer: “I skate to where the puck is going to be, not to where it is.”

I’ve repeated this story to many clients over the years and believe it is the essence of a successful startup.

For mobile social shopping the puck is going to the smartphone replacing cash, checks and credit cards for in-store purchases. It is inevitable that consumers will be paying with their phones; its not a matter of if, but when.

Thus anyone planning to deliver a great experience to consumers and real value to retailers and brands needs to plan their strategy around where this retail puck is going, not where it is right now, which seems to be using your phone primarily as a price comparison tool.
