ShopKick in stealth mode

by SteveBayle on December 23, 2009

According to Techcrunch:

Here’s what CEO Cyriac Roeding will say about Shopkick which is scheduled to launch in 2010: they aim to bridge the gap between the mobile phone and the physical shopping worlds.

Michael Arrington goes on to describe CauseWorld, which seems like some sort of precursor to Shopkick:

I also note a brilliant business plan – finding ways to get people to step foot inside a physical store.

ShopKick looks like a company to keep an eye on.

This is the most serious potential competitor to date. They seem to have built a compelling and addictive app. It is worth watching the excitement of the founder describing his “first” app (hinting that there will be more than just one). The video also shows very polished screenshots. I think that Verbela will tremendously benefit from killer graphics. Their backers are the mighty KPCB which to me it means “validation”. Obviously, there are no hints on what the revenue model can be for ShopKick. My bet is that they are currently testing some hypotheses of which CauseWorlds is the first. Another noteworthy takeaway from the video is that they are solving the problem of “which store am I am in” by presenting a list of nearby stores to the user and let the user pick the one where he actually is.
